about me
I'm a creative, director and writer (and, occasionally, an executive producer). What inspires me is not just creating beautiful films, but creating the right ones for the audience, channel and budget. Ones that tell stories that move people; that motivate, educate, inform, persuade and entertain the viewer, whoever they may be. Content that truly engages people and changes the way they think, feel and behave.
Over the last decade or so I’ve written and/or directed between thirty and fifty projects every year for a huge range of agencies and clients. For some projects I provide creative ideation, for others I write scripts for existing creative ideas, for some I direct live action, for others I oversee the content and direct the sound track of animations, or help create the live action elements of mixed live action/animation/gfx projects. Often I do all these things, or at least several of them, in combination.
I bring to this an unusually broad perspective. In the past I’ve been both a commissioner and a producer; a client and also a supplier. My experience spans the public, private and voluntary sectors; in broadcast, online and offline media. I’ve filmed in more than 20 countries, across four continents: everywhere from the Sahara Desert to China, Canada to Azerbaijan, Egypt to Indonesia; from working on operations in Iraq, to creating TV programmes in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
I have extensive experience of working with both talent and young people, as well as dealing with senior business figures, politicians, celebrities, and high net worth individuals. I'm also adept at creating films designed to connect with hard to reach or niche audiences of all ages and socio-economic profiles. I’ve had hostile environment training, but have also been trained in behaviour change and communication theory. I’ve won awards for my directing, my writing and my producing at New York, Cannes and EVCOM/IVCA. My screenplays have won awards at festivals in the UK, Spain, Italy and the USA. A number of films I've directed, written and produced have been included in the collection of the UK's National Archives.
I’ve been freelance for about 12 years. Before that I spent seven years making transformative, behaviour-changing moving image content for government at the COI (Central Office of Information). There I ended up as Deputy-Director of Content, overseeing the production of all moving image content, including TV commercials, TV fillers, digital and mobile content, long form broadcast programming, branded content and advertiser funded programming, interactive TV, experiential films and ambient display, as well as all the COI’s considerable non-broadcast output. This amounted to more than 250 individual projects, with budgets totalling more than £28m, each year.
Before joining the COI, I spent twelve years as a director, writer and producer of broadcast documentaries for the BBC and Channel Five, as well as corporate films for blue-chip clients.

directing
I've directed all sorts of films, including documentary, comedy, drama and vfx-based pieces. I’ve worked extensively with mixed live action and animation, as well as provided content and sound track direction for numerous wholly animated projects. I’ve helped create branded content, on air promos, social media content, b2b, b2c, internal comms and experiential pieces. I've acted as Creative Director on a number of virtual events for an international NGO and also a global engineering company, as well as helped create 47 separate awards films for one of the world's largest mining companies. I've also been involved in the production a podcast and devised some pre-rolls for YouTube. Increasingly I also edit some of my work. (To help finesse my editing skills, I undertook an Adobe Certified Premiere Masterclass in 2019).

writing & development
I work as a creative for a number of agencies, coming up with ideas for online ads and social media campaigns for a range of major brands. I also do a great deal of script-writing, not just for live action, but also, extensively, for animation. I’ve also written film and project briefs for the likes of Google and the FCO, as well as moving image strategy documents and training courses. I’ve helped develop branded content ideas and competition spots for Discovery Networks and AFP proposals for both BBC Worldwide and CNN.
I’ve also written creative treatments, content plans and scripts for large-scale, big budget, immersive experiential projects for the World Economic Forum in Davos, the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, the Norsk Oljemuseum in Stavanger and the Old Laboratory at RHS Wisley, and for interactive displays at the US Olympic and Paralympic Museum in Colorado Springs, the Oman Across the Ages Museum and the British Museum. I'm currently about to start working on a 4d cinema experience for two major heritage sites in the UK.
I also write for the big screen. My short film script Face Value was long listed for the UK Film Festival Script Competition, as was my feature-length screenplay Dead Cat. The latter then went on reach the quarter finals of the London International Screenwriting Competition in 2020 and the semi finals of the Best Script Award 2021. My screenplay Sleeper was a semi-finalist in the London International Screenwriting Competition in 2021 and was included in the official selection for the Amsterdam World International Film Festival 2021.
In 2022 my screenplay Fairfield Park was selected as a semi-finalist in the London International Screenwriting Competition, and another of my screenplays, 1987, made the quarter-final. Three of my screenplays also received honorable mentions in the New Creators Film Awards in Paris and 1987 made the official selection of Spain's Gil International Screenwriting Competition. 1987 then won Best Feature Screenplay at the Rome Prisma International Film Awards in 2022, (and two of my other screenplays made the festival's official selection). 1987 then won the award for Best 1st Time Screenwriter at the Vegas Movie Awards in January 2023.
Also in 2023, my screenplay, Who They?, won Best Sci-Fi Screenplay at the Gil International Screenwriting Competition and also at the Best Script Awards in London. It then scooped Best Feature Script at the Toronto Film and Screenplay Awards. It was a finalist in the Les Prix du Scénario de Paris, a quarter-finalist in the Emerging Screenwriters Sci-fi and Fantasy Screenplay Competition and the London International Screenwriting Competition, and also part of the official selection at the Rome Prisma Film Awards and the Montreal Independent Film Festival.
In 2024 my new screenplay, JDLR, won the London International Screenwriting Competition, became a finalist at the Rome Prisma Film Awards and made the final three in its category at the New York Screenwriting Awards. It was also a nominee in both the Toronto Film & Script Awards and the Chicago Indie Film Awards, and it the made the official selection of the Tokyo Lift Off Film Festival.

Praise for 'Who They?' from the judges at the London International Screenwriting Competition:
"Dynamic dialogue and quirky characters fill these pages! Each scene builds upon the next to create a story that pulls readers in. The focus on women in various settings and situations makes this screenplay unique and intriguing. A fantastic blend of humour and heartfelt emotions!"

Praise for 'JDLR' from the judges at the London International Screenwriting Competition:
"The writer has a unique style that does not just visually bring out the character's action and dialogue... They live it. They bring their best. Characters that are engaging. They pull us into the story. We bond well with them as we feel their joy, pain, and sorrow. Characters carry the story... The writer knows this all too well. The writer has a strong voice."

other stuff
Amongst other projects, I've created the brief for the tender of an in-house content creation capability for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and helped to spec out, install and set up an in-house studio to create video content on a daily basis for a firm in The City. The latter included helping to recruit team members, schedule, research and draw up a kit list, train participants and manage the initial post launch production period. I’ve also created and delivered training courses in content creation for DirectGov and the National Police Improvement Agency, as well as produced user-generated content plans and filming briefs for a number of clients looking to create their own content. I've also provided holiday cover as executive producer a number of times for a major London production house and worked as script editor on a Swiss true-crime podcast.
